Anna Maria O’Connell, a rising opera singer with her eye on the Metropolitan Opera, jumps at the chance to spend the summer as artist-in-residence at her alma mater, the Conservatory of the Midwest. It promises to be a wonderful break from the grind of concert touring—six weeks sharing a luxury penthouse with her two best friends while they turn aspiring young musicians into professional artists. It looks like the perfect way to spend the summer, until murder intrudes.

Anna Maria discovers something is distinctly off-key as everyone seems to have a motive for strangling the young pianist, and embezzlement undermines the school’s desperate fundraising plan. The investigation isn’t helped by bickering among the eccentric faculty and competition among students driven to succeed at any cost. Worse yet, with her beloved uncle the police detective hot on the trail of a murderer, it’s only a matter of time before the news of the stolen funds leaks to the press. If the donors find out, the school is finished.

Well. I got this book to read on a train trip across country, on my new Kindle. So, it was an experience to have the book in the first place. I haven't read a 'book' on a train, since the 1980's when I travelled across Europe, as a post-grad, 'discovering the world.' And, having been in the thick of Opera, and the Operatic world back then, the timing of this book (written to be situated in the '80's) was a fun reminder of our naive innocence as 'divas' and 'divos' with all that attendant egotism in tow.

Now, to the book. The author writes well. Her characterizations are well-drawn, from the NY Diva, to the mousy, neurotic 'student-with-no-talent' at the summer camp. The one character that should have been far more flamboyant was the gay accompanist/pianist. He could have been a cross between Oscar Levant, (who had talent, but no looks) with his cutting barbs, and poignant one-liners, and Ned Rorem, (who had looks, but a vastly overrated talent) whose ego has managed (over the last half-century) to write at least six memoir/diaries, all replete with his never-ending casual one-night stands. If the author has been 'in the biz' she surely would have known scores of characters like that. So her feeble attempts at drawing a three-dimensional counterfoil to the Diva (the Diva against the Diva?) didn't quite come off- we are left thinking that everyone revolved around this Italian redheaded soprano, who hasn't even achieved the Met yet, but who has an ego the size of Callas.

As to the mystery, if you have ever been in a summer camp, Opera workshop, program, or even just was an undergrad music major, you will find this quite enjoyable. The Musical references, descriptions of the tedium of the practice room, and the chess playing of peoples' inflated egos, is spot-on. There are a few minor (if glaring) errors, but it has been a while since I read the book, and I can't remember what they are/were now.

The denoument is quite well written, and yet, I knew it was coming, at least forty pages before it happened. Now, maybe I've been spoiled by starting out reading murder mysteries by beginning this genre with Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Sayers. But I also have read " The Cat who..." books. I would say this author sustains our interest on a par with the best of those books, while not relying on a formulaic style of writing. For the Opera queen, opera lover, and aspiring diva who thinks everything in life is perpetually the second act of Tosca, this is a very enjoyable book to read.... on a train, or off!

Strangled Melody edition by Katherine Lee Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written and highly engaging story.
I suspect that talented author Katherine Lee is also a classically trained musician. In addition to the intriguing mystery that drives the story forward, the reader is treated to a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of aspiring performers and scholars. The prose is flawless, the pace is perfect. The situations, characters, and insights she creates around the "Conservatory of the Midwest" are all very believable. I loved Anna Maria, the opera-singing detective, her pianist sidekick, her dynamic manager, and her pasta-cooking Italian mama. Throw in an cop ex-boyfriend, a troubled musical genius, colorful students and professors, and an unsolved murder with a rising tide of danger and you've got a recipe for a wonderful read. Highly recommended!
